Celebrity News:

Amy Rhodes's job as director of content for FunnyOrDie.com has brought out some hidden talents. Not only is she responsible for organizing and producing content for one of the Web's most popular comedy video sites, but she has also battled travel and production delays on the eight-city Funny or Die Tour, which arrives at the University of Rhode Island on Tuesday and then for a sold-out show at Boston College on Wednesday. Now she has been enlisted as a ninja, attacking Will Ferrell in the show's opening bit.

It's a tough gig for Rhodes to describe. Ferrell hosts the evening, and Zach Galifianakis, Demetri Martin, and Nick Swardson perform stand-up comedy. After that, Rhodes isn't sure what to tell people about what they'll see.

"They'll see stand-up," she says from the airport in Lansing, Mich. "Then they'll see Will doing . . . Will doing. . . well, fighting ninjas, and doing a couple of other things that we want to keep as a surprise for the audience."

As one of the creative forces behind FunnyOrDie.com, along with director Adam McKay and writer/producer Chris Henchy, Ferrell is Rhodes's boss. Rhodes heads a creative team of six people who write, shoot, and edit content for the site, which appears alongside user-uploaded videos. Potential ninja injuries aside, the Tufts grad and former ImprovBoston player wouldn't trade places with anyone and doesn't think anyone on her staff would, either. "We're all kind of like, what did we do in past lives to end up here?" she says.

The site isn't just a vanity project for Ferrell, McKay (director of "Anchorman" and "Talladega Nights"), and Henchy (a writer/producer on "Entourage" and writer of Ferrell's upcoming "Land of the Lost" remake), who are all used to working on high-profile projects. Ferrell stars in some of the site's shorts (Rhodes estimates there are some 25,000 currently up on the site), including "The Landlord," featuring Ferrell getting abused by an infant girl demanding her rent money. That video helped launch the site last April, and at last count, had topped 53 million views. McKay directs and can often be seen somewhere in the background of the videos. Henchy runs the production company behind the site, Gary Sanchez Productions. All three maintain "favorites" channels on the site.

"They're all three, really hands on," says Rhodes. "They help us come up with ideas, they help with securing content."

The other benefit of having such well-connected bosses is that they can get their well-known colleagues, from Judd Apatow to David Spade, to contribute videos. In one current favorite, Jerry Minor directs Jerry O'Connell in a spot-on impression of Tom Cruise spouting about acting and Scientology. And Rhodes and company caused a bit of a stir when they gave "Entertainment Tonight" a first look at their Eva Longoria sex tape parody, which some blogs took seriously.

"Gossip blogs were saying, 'There's this rumor about this sex tape that's going to come out tomorrow,' and then it turned out to be on Funny or Die," she says. "It's great when we can pull something like that off."

The other draw of the site is the user-uploaded content. Anyone can create an account and upload a video to be judged by FunnyOrDie.com's audience alongside the celebrity content. Rhodes, who has performed with and taught for the Upright Citizens Brigade troupe in both New York and Los Angeles, has been able to bring some of her friends along. "I know a lot of comedians, so I have some connections with those people to help get the videos on our site," she says.

According to Rhodes, last month was the site's best month so far and traffic keeps growing.

"If people come because Will Ferrell's name is on it, they stay because we have a lot of interesting content," she says. "We're distinguishing ourselves as the place to find funny content on the Web."
