Arlen Specter, the 77-year-old Pennsylvania senator and former Philadelphia district attorney, doesn’t exactly exude humor. But apparently he’s got a knack for stand-up comedy.

The five-term senator won second place in the annual D.C.’s Funniest Celebrity contest last night, finishing behind an editor for the satirical newspaper The Onion. He beat out a crew of contestants that included Wonkette founder Ana Marie Cox and Grover Norquist, the president of Americans for Tax Reform.

And he wasn’t afraid to use some low-brow humor in the process, poking fun at his former Senate colleague Bob Dole, a one-time pitchman for Viagra. He recounted a conversation he had with Dole recently, where the former presidential candidate said his wife, Elizabeth, was angry with him for complaining about the cost of the sexual-enhancing drug.

"He said, ‘Arlen, you know they cost $10 a pill,’" Specter said. "I said, ‘Bob, how in the hell would I know about that?’"

The room broke into laughter, but Specter wasn’t done: "And then Elizabeth said to him in anger … ‘Bob, you can afford $40 a year!’"
